AT&T says it plans to expand the markets for its gigabit broadband AT&T GigaPower service to at least parts of 38 new metro markets. The expansion of its fiber to the premises (FTTP) footprint will bring the number of metro markets where it offers the service to 56.

Spanish eyes are currently smiling on record growth in the fiber to the home (FTTH) market, as operators compete to roll out super-fast broadband across a country that has previously been slow to embrace new technology.

According to the Leichtman Research Group, 81% of U.S. households get a broadband Internet service at home, an increase from 26% in 2005. Broadband now accounts for 97% of all households with Internet service at home, an increase from 91% in 2010, and 40% in 2005.

The Vodafone Group has started rolling out fibre to the home (FTTH) programmes in Ireland and Portugal as part of a €600 million network expansion programme.

FTTH Council releases 2015 data on expansion of fiber broadband networks

Washington, DC (November 16, 2015) – The Fiber to the Home (FTTH) Council Americas has released the results of a survey by RVA, LLC showing that fiber deployments in the United States grew 13 percent in 2015.

As the UK government announced a new “legal right” to fast broadband, UK telecoms regulator Ofcom is to release a new app to allow the public to gauge the real level of broadband speed being offered.

China’s State Council has approved a project designed to improve broadband services in rural areas, in turn helping to bridge the digital divide.

In light of a successful field trial of NG-PON2 technology, Verizon (NYSE, NASDAQ: VZ) may have first office deployments as soon as early next year. The deployments will target business services delivery, according to Vincent O’Byrne, director of access technology for Verizon.
